UMES to Honor High Achievers

    Coleman, Dr. AntoinettePRINCESS ANNE, MD - Hundreds of University of Maryland Eastern Shore students receive special recognition for academic excellence during the 55th annual UMES Honors Convocation ceremony of Thursday, April 3, in the Ella Fitzgerald Center for the Performing Arts.  UMES alumna Antoinette A. Coleman, Ph.D., is the keynote speaker.

    Coleman, UMES Class of '78, is dean for the Bowie State University School of Professional Studies, where she provides leadership for four departments with seven majors and two graduate programs and manages a $3.8 million budget.  Prior to holding her position at Bowie State, she has held positions of leadership at Norfolk State, Coppin State and University of Maryland Baltimore.

    Outside of higher education, Coleman has served as special projects administrator of legislative matters and program development for the City of Baltimore mayor's Office of Human Development/Children and Youth in Baltimore, Md.; social work coordinator at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C.; and coordinator for renal medicine social work at Bon Secours Hospital in Baltimore, Md.

    From the University of Maryland Baltimore School of Social Work, Coleman earned a Ph.D. in social work research, policy and administration and a Master in Social Work (MSW) in clinical social work.  She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, having graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology with a concentration in social work. Coleman holds graduate certifications in aging and child welfare from the University of Maryland Baltimore School of Social Work and the University of Maryland College Park. Additionally, she earned a post- graduate certification in higher education administration and leadership from the Bryn Mawr College Institute for Women in Higher Education Administration.
