E-Health Project Offers Community Education, Awareness
PRINCESS ANNE, MD - University of Maryland Eastern Shore School of Pharmacy and Health Professions students gear up to conduct community education programs at each of three county libraries, located in Somerset, Wicomico and Worcester counties, on Wednesday, February 11, in accordance with the recently funded UMES e-Health Access Project.
To specifically address health disparities in the African American community on the lower Eastern Shore, The United Negro College Fund Special Programs Corporation and the National Library of Medicine funded the e-Health Access Project proposed by UMES principal investigator Dr. James Heimdal, chair of the Department of Exercise Science. For the project, UMES School of Pharmacy and Health Professions students have been trained to conduct resource training sessions at convenient corporate/community locations. The primary goal is to eliminate health disparities by increasing the awareness and utilization of the National Library of Medicine's Medline Plus online resources.
Community members in attendance on February 11 can expect to receive hands-on instruction from 5-7 p.m. at the Princess Anne Library, from 6-8 p.m. at the Wicomico Public Library and from 6-8 p.m. at the Snow Hill Branch Library. The National Library of Medicine in conjunction with the National Institutes of Health provides comprehensive health information in over 40 languages. Online offerings include 750 health topics on conditions, diseases and wellness; information about prescriptions and over-the-counter medicines, herbs and supplements; a medical encyclopedia and dictionary; current health news and press announcements; doctor, dentist and hospital directories; and more.
