University of Maryland Eastern Shore
An Open Letter to the UMES Community
Diversity and inclusion are cornerstones of this University.
Recent events within our state, nation and world have compelled us to confront issues that challenge our beliefs, make us think and adjust our perspective—all hallmarks of higher learning.
At UMES, the development of students’ knowledge of complex social issues, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to express emotions and perspectives constructively and rationally are considered desired educational outcomes.
The Internet and social media are increasingly being used as ways to communicate. A community of scholars can and should use these forms of communication to promote dialogue, civil discussion on differences of opinion and change.
UMES does not condone the use of social media to foster, encourage, or express anti-social and uncivil behavior, harassment, or threats. Such behavior is contrary to the principles of integrity, commitment, accountability, respect and excellence (ICARE).
UMES strives to foster a campus climate that is inclusive, tolerant and accepting.
When circumstances warrant, we will take action to address behavior that strays from our core values.
I encourage you to take advantage of this moment to be THE ONE who makes a difference on our campus and in our community.
