Office of Human Resources
Dealing with human resources is one of the most challenging jobs we have as managers. Filling job vacancies can indeed be a time-consuming and complex assignment. Each time we make a personnel selection decision, organizational goals are affected, so maximizing our effectiveness in this area is vital to organizational health.
Supervisors who interview job candidates have critical responsibilities including: interviewing applicants and selecting employees on the basis of job-related criteria, and in accordance with legal requirements; documenting the steps taken in the hiring process; and, implementing the concepts of the UMES Affirmative Action Plan in the area supervised by them.
The role of the Office of Personnel/Human Relations in this process is:
Providing assistance to managers in hiring the best qualified applicant and in meeting their affirmative action goals;
Advertising, recruiting and developing representative applicant pools;
Maintaining records necessary for EEOC, legal or unemployment compensation cases.
