TV personalities speak at UMES conference
PRINCESS ANNE, MD-(Mary 26, 2011) Television personalities Judge Glenda Hatchett, Donna Brazile, Omari Hardwick, Fonzworth Bentley, Lecia Rives and Timothy Dean will address student leaders at a conference hosted by the University of Maryland Eastern Shore May 29-June 6. Some events are open to the public.
Part of the National Association of Student Affairs Professionals (NASAP) conference, the Student Leadership Institute will attract nearly 300 students from 32 Historically Black College and Universities. The conference will give students, who were recently elected to organizations on their campuses, the “necessary tools, skills and knowledge to prepare for their roles and for today’s business world,” said James Lunnermon II, director of student activities at UMES.
“The guest speakers the NASAP committee has chosen this year are sure to excite and motivate these young minds,” Lunnermon said.
Hatchett, of the former, nationally-syndicated TV courtroom hit “Judge Hatchett” is the first speaker on Tuesday, May 31, from 3:30-5 p.m. in a lecture series open to the public. She is known for her “interventions” and is widely respected for her positive impact on the lives of troubled youth and their families. She is also the author of “Say What You Mean and Mean What You Say,” based on her professional experiences and her role as the mother 
of two boys.
A veteran democratic political strategist Donna Brazile takes the podium on Wednesday, June 1, from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Brazile is author of the best-selling memoir “Cooking with Grease: Stirring the Pots in American Politics.” She is an adjunct professor at Georgetown University and a syndicated newspaper columnist for United Media, Ms. Magazine and Oprah Winfrey’s magazine “O.” As a 
political commentator, she is an on-air contributor to CNN and appears regularly on “This Week with Christiane Amanpour.” Her passion “is encouraging young people to vote, to work within the system to strengthen it, and to run for public office.”
Hardwick speaks on Thursday, June 2, from 10-11:30 a.m. He is best known for television work in starring roles on TNT’s “Dark Blue” as Ty Curtis with co-star Dylan McDermott and as John Hallon in the 2006 series “Saved.” Some of his film credits include Tyler Perry’s “For Colored Girls,” “Kick-Ass” with Nicolas Cage, “The Guardian” with Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher and “Beauty Shop” with Queen Latifah.
The above events open to the public are in the university’s Student Services Center. Bentley, Rives and Timothy Dean will 
address conference participants in private sessions.
Bentley is author of “Advance Your Swagger: How to Use Manners, Confidence and Style to Get Ahead” and host of the TV reality game show “From G’s to Gents.”
Rives, a motivational speaker and comedian, is the author of “Get Up and Be Somebody” and a contributing writer for In Magazine. She is also the voice of the “Get Up and Be Somebody” moment on Sunday Morning Live.
“Top Chef” Timothy Dean is currently the chef and owner of Prime Steak House in Baltimore with another under his name opening this summer in Washington, D.C. He has worked with culinary greats Jean-Louis Palladin, Alain Ducasse, Roberto Donna, Guenter Seeger and Patrick Clark .
